Formatting Your Dates To Show The Period Number

Are you looking for an easy and effective method of displaying the period for a given date? Perhaps you have a sales report and you intend to analyse the dates by periods, then the Custom Format option is the answer.

By using a Custom Format, you can show the period of the date (in this case the month) without changing the date in the field.

Applies To: MS Excel 2003, 2007 and 2010 

1. Select the date’s data range

2. Right click on the selected data range

3. Select Format Cells

4. Under Category, select Custom

5. In the Type box, enter  m

6. Select OK
