Creating Custom Calculations in the Layout Generator

If you’re familiar with the Layout Generator in the Report Designer, you will know that it includes a number of standard calculations that make it easier to design your report layouts. Standard calculations may however not cater for all situations. The Layout Generator’s built in Calculator solves this by allowing you to create your own custom row and column calculations. The calculator has an easy-to-use interface with useful features like Set % and Set Variance. In this tip, we’ll show you how to create a Quarter One column calculation.

How to create a Quarter One Column Calculation:

There are two ways to add a column calculation in the Layout Generator. For both of them, you need to have the columns tab selected. Once selected, you can either click on Add Calculation on the right of the columns tab, or with the CALCULATIONS view selected, right click anywhere in the CALCULATIONS area and select New Calculation.

With the Calculator open and the formulas tab selected, do the following:

  1. Click on Actual 01
  2. Then select the plus (+) sign
  3. Click on Actual 02
  4. Now select the plus (+) sign
  5. Click on Actual 03

You will notice that as you click on the arguments and operators, they are added to the Calculation Area. You have successfully enter the formula to return your Quarter 1 total. If you want, you can also use existing calculations in your formulas. These are found in the calculator under the calculations tab.

The last thing to do is to save your calculation. Click on save and enter Quarter 1 in the dialogue box that appears, then click OK. Take a look at the bottom of the CALCULATIONS view, your calculation will be added there.
